One of my drawings and one of my poems
BETWEEN YOUR DOTS
in a world composed of dots
you suddenly appear
in the checkout line
ten feet away
three years after our last talk
you ask me to wait
so we can chat
and we do for a few minutes
until you walk away again
back to your car
and just minutes later
my heart is soaring once again
as I drive away
two miles down the same street
where I see you
pull into your driveway
and you seem to slow down
and turn your head
to get another look at me
and I realize
it could be another three years
before I see you again
even for small talk
and I feel the air leaking
from my chest
as I descend back to earth
kicking and screaming
and terribly lost once again
between your dots
